Slime. If you have kids (or even if you don’t) you probably know that it is the most popular toy of both 2017 and 2018. Kids can’t stop talking about it: it’s goopy, it’s sticky, it’s even a little bit gross. How could you not love it? If you are a parent, you have probably spent a lot of time googling the best slime and slime kits of 2018, and we are here to help.
Maybe your kid wants green slime to reenact their favorite scenes from Ghostbusters or Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awards, or maybe they just want to feel it squish between their fingers. Maybe they want fluffy slime, or runny slime, or glitzy glitter slime. No matter what you and your family are looking for, there is something out there for you.
Before we get to the list of the best slime and slime kits of 2018, though, we want to tell you a little bit about what slime is and why kids love it. We’ll even give you a recipe so you can try to make your own at home!
What is Slime?
(And Why Does Everyone Love It So Much?)
At its most basic level, there is not a lot to slime. It is a mixture of three simple ingredients – sodium borate, water, and glue – that create an unusual chemical reaction when they come into contact with each other. According to Raychelle Burks, an assistant professor of chemistry at Saint Edward’s University, adding sodium borate to water begins a process that produces something called an “anion,” a compound with a negative charge.
That negative charge enables the molecules in the chemically altered water to hook onto the molecules in polymers like Elmer’s glue. The polymer molecules are then held in place, forming a substance that is no longer liquid, and yet not quite a solid either.
It is likely this scientific aspect of slime that makes it so intriguing to kids and adults alike. It is amazing to take just a few simple household liquids and mix them together to form something entirely new and different. A chemical reaction takes place right there in front of your eyes, making you feel like a super scientist. What’s not to love about that?
How Can I Make Slime at Home?
For the past few years, making your own slime has been all the rage in schools and households across America. You could go to the store or look online for a slime shop and buy some slime, sure, but that won’t give you the same feeling of accomplishment as making your very own slime right there on your kitchen counter! (This should in no means keep you from reading the list we compiled below though…)
So, if you want to make some DIY slime, how do you get started? There are hundreds of different recipes out there, depending on what type of slime you want to make (thin, thick, fluffy, glittery, putty, etc), but we’ll start you off with a simple one. You can find a similar recipe with more photos on Little Bins for Little Hands.
Simple Slime Recipe
1/2 cup Elmer’s White or Clear School Glue (or off-brand equivalent)
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon contact solution or saline solution with boric acid and sodium borate (the saline solution is thought to be the safer choice)
1. Start by pouring the glue and the water into a mixing bowl. Mix well.
2. Add your food coloring and glitter. Choose whichever color you want, or use several different colors and mix them together to form your own signature hue! Around ten drops of food coloring should do it, although you can add a bit more or a bit less depending on your needs. The amount of glitter you use is up to you as well – some people want their slime to look like a disco ball, and others just want a little bit of sparkle. It’s totally up to you!
3. Stir in the baking soda to help firm up the mixture. 1/2 teaspoon is the average, but if you want runnier slime, make it 1/4 teaspoon. Want thicker slime? Try a full teaspoon. This is a science experiment after all, so it is a learning process!
4. This is where the magic happens. Add the contact or saline solution to the mixture and stir quickly, as if you are trying to whip meringue. (Kids are great at this part!)
5. Continue to stir until the mixture begins to pull away from the sides and bottom of the bowl. Once this happens, squirt a bit of saline solution on your hands and pick up the “dough.” Knead it with your hands, pulling and stretching it to get all those molecules to hook onto each other like we discussed above. This will help the slime to thicken up to the perfect consistency.
Once your slime is ready, it’s time to play with it! Stretch it, throw it, dump it on your little sister’s head – you’re the mad scientist here, you can do what you want!
When playtime is over, you can store the slime in a plastic Tupperware container. It is recommended, though, that you don’t use the same containers later for food. It should also be mentioned that even though Elmer’s Glue is non-toxic, it is not a good idea to let your kids eat slime!
If you make your own slime at home, let us see a photo of it in the comments! We would love to see your creations.
And if you’re not the DIY type… that’s okay! In fact, it’s better than okay. You don’t have to make slime to have a good time, you can buy it online! Keep reading to check out the list of the top ten best slimes and slime kits of 2018 we made just for you!
